Direct entry to top UK and US universities

Greek students who have completed, or are currently doing the Greek system of Panhellenic examinations, have the opportunity to apply directly to top universities in the United Kingdom and the United States.

How do you do this?

Firstly, there is no need to do any foundation course in order to secure a place at a leading university in the UK or the US. However, you will need good grades in your Panhellenic examinations and in your Apolytirion. If you are aiming for a really world class university then you will need at least 18/20 in your final grades.

If you wish to apply to a UK university then your application will be very much strengthened if you have attained at least one GCE A-Level in an appropriate subject. In addition, you will need proof of your proficiency in the English language. Therefore, you must take either a TOEFL test or an IELTS test (all English tests are valid for two years only).

If you wish to apply to a US university then you must take the SAT examination and normally three SAT subject tests. In addition you must take the TOEFL test to prove that your competence in the English language is sufficient.

How do you apply?

TO UK UNIVERSITIES

All applcations to universities in the United Kingdom are processed via the Internet, and specifially via UCAS - www.ucas.com The official deadline for regular admission for degree courses that begin in September/October the following year is December of the present year. For example, if you are interested in applying for a place to begin in September 2008, then you should submit your completed application via UCAS by the end of December 2007. In your application you will be asked to include all your qualifications till present, a personal statement, an official reference, translations of all transcripts, and  six (6) unversities and corresponding courses of your choice. If you successfully complete and submit your application then you should expect offers (or rejections) from the six universities you have selected in not more than three months. Assuming you receive offers there will be conditions - for example, you will be accepted if you get more than 17/20 in your Apolytirion and a "A" Grade in a Mathematics GCE A-Level, and a certain score in the TOEFL/IELTS English examination. At this point, assuming you have a maximum of six offers, you must reject 4 universities and keep just two. Once you have learned of your results of your examinations - probably in July/August - you must, depending on your results, reject one of the two universities, and hopefully, retain the university of your choice. If all goes well you should be on an aeroplane to the university of your choice at the end of September.

TO US UNIVERSITIES

All applications to US universities are also processed via the Internet and specifically via the Collegeboard - www.collegeboard.com  As with British universities, US universities will place an emphasis on your school grades (from the Lyceum) especially on your performance in the last two years. In addition, you will be expected to sit the SAT examination, normally three SAT Subject Tests, and fulfill the English language requirement (TOEFL). If you are aiming for a top US university then you will need at least 1200/1600 in the SAT I examination and around 700/800 in the SAT Subject tests. A top university is regarded as one of the top 30 in the US.

US universities receive your ONLY your examination results via the Collegeboard, that is the results of your SAT examinations. You have to make a separate application to the university yourself. There is no limit to the number of universities you can apply to - most candidates apply to 8-10 universities. In your application you will be asked to include all the details of your education and write essays on specific topics. Note that you must pay for each application (normally in the region of $60-75). Your SAT scores are forwarded to your selected universities via Collegeboard.

The majority of US universities expect all applications to be delivered by 1st of January of any given year, though there are exceptions. That means you must have ALL your scores from both school and the SATs ready by that date. Around March/April you ought to learn whether you have been offered a place or not. There might well be an interview process, especially if you are applying to one of the top US universities.

How much does it cost?

In England, tuition fees are approximately 5000 euros per year. Living expenses vary depending on where you are studying. London is notoriously expensive. Generally speaking, allow another 1500 euros per month (approximately) for living expenses over a six-month period - the university year is six months long.

In Scotland, there are no tuition fees, so all you have to pay for is your living expenses.

In the US, tuition fees (including accommodation and food) vary from $25000-35000 per year.
